But they do not rebuild a house
or cause the breath to come again.
The door is locked. The key is eaten;
The way is barred. The damage done.

FROM THE PAINTER
I was commissioned by Brittany Wyatt to interpret several poems from her debut book Memento Mori: When Ecclesiastes Sprouts Legs, which was published in 2012.
Much of the emotion in her work hit hit me on a personal level, none more than this poem above. To me the message is clear and doesn’t require explanation. It is dedicated to the memory of Dana, for whom without, I would not be painting.
